"The idea for my first table came to fruition during a visit to the Louvre in 2005. My very rough drawing on a napkin in the cafe provided all the impetus I needed. Reflecting on the practicalities of my vision, I took the decision to make the whole table in bronze, putting my love of clay to one side. The only remaining ceramic part was a single clay disk inset.
Once finished, my table was neither entirely a table nor a sculpture. Even though I was working in a medium that is typically associated with classical sculpture, it was somewhere in between.
Later on, I combined different materials, like gilded timber columns, ceramic bases, bronze wingnuts and bur wooden tops, to transcend my original resolution of all bronze. These tables in particular remind me of Degas’ bronze ballerina with a material tutu and ballet shoes. In many ways, this kind of adornment makes this piece fit less with classical sculpture, but influenced the marriage of materials that defines my later tables. I see these tables as my Degas tables."
