"THE SHOPHOUSE asked me if I would participate in an exhibition, making something in response to Juno Mak’s film ‘Rigor Mortis’. I watched the film twice and concluded that some of the deeper messages and nuances may not be conveyed by the subtitles alone. Despite this limitation, interpretations can often be as important as the intention.
At around the same time, and independently of this conversation, I had started to explore another idea, which I called ‘Last Supper’. Similarly to my previous inquiries, ‘The Age of The Beaker’ and ‘Evolution of Beaker’, it centred around the serving of food and the crucial role of the vessel in the experience. The finite aspect of this new idea meant that it wasn’t initially appealing to many people. However, when considered as a response to a horror film, every aspect of the experience took on a different meaning. The significance of Nigel Slater’s quote ‘to live with and be buried with’ helped me understand my own attachment to the vessel, ceremony and people.
Maybe this will be my last thought as I lie with my pot by my side."
