In Frosty Morning C, the text and image are fluid and in constant motion. The moment freezes as the artist captures a snapshot of the machine-learning process. In real life, the value of newspapers lies in their information and state of urgency. The normality of newspapers is as typical as the carpet seen in front of a household, constituting a crucial part to the modern life.
Frosty Morning is a multi-channel video installation generated by Neural Networks, which are rhythmic structures made by human beings that simulate our brain and nervous systems. After the artist’s research on Machine Learning and Neural Networks, an Artificial Neural Network is trained to “read” the front page of The New York Times from the last 6 years. By imitating the data set, it starts to render the newspaper, generate blurred image, and approach the form of reality, but never realizing the legible content. As a perpetual newspaper generator or a machine trying to predict “the future,” the work seems to reflect the reasonable and overwhelming world in the present.
Shi Zheng's artistic creations range from audio-visual installations, digital music and live performance, demonstrating the artist's ongoing interest in simulation and "machine vision". Shi further embodies his reflection on the philosophy of technology, digital voyage and "latent time" by extending the audience's visual and audio experience.
